Task Force - Music From The Corner 1 - 4 (2001, 2003, 2004, 2006)

these are all fully-fledged and near flawless albums, complete with skits (the era of which may be just abouuuuttt ovvveerrrr) and interludes and intros and all that shit. MFTC albums are pretty goddamn disheartening, but holy fucking christ they are good at what they do. each album just flows past, and you could easily listen to all four straight through without ever getting bored or noticing a discontinuity. the production is amazing.

since posting four in one is kind of daunting, I recommend getting Vol 4 first and working backwards, then buying volume 5 once it's out. but try it at least. I'm all for the new kanye, but I'm far more excited about a 5th volume of this.

Final - My Body Is a Dying Machine EP 2010

JKB stuff (his first band! from the early 80's!, i have since learned), sans the motion of jesu, but with some really solid drone. it sounds like the ending soundtrack to a movie about two young heroin addicts that are in love (which already exists in several forms, but this is better than those). and instead of a super grim ending, theres a climax at night in a rainy city in the summer and a very bleak sunrise in the denouement, but with the message that anyone could be perfect.

this is old port royal done better than port royal did it.

gravity is phenomenal.

Queen Elephantine - Kailash 2009

started in hong kong, moved to NYC. very, very unique sense of psych drone, lots of chanting vocals, lots of tabla and sitar, some really interesting tones. each song is very different, which is very refreshing, but it is all very ambient and spiritual and psychedelic.

i really like the spoken word outro of the first song, and the what the fuck is that noise? sense at the beginning of (and then continuing through) priest. highly, highly recommended. get it just for how fucking great every vocal style they use is. like, i dont think i could ever play something like this, drone-wise. the vocals are much, much more prominent than the music (very subtle and repetitive, with very little distortion and sparse percussion), which is awesome, but just like...playing drone and having it so reliant on the voice is really really impressive. and they do it very well, and i wish more bands did it.

dont like drone? fuck you.

like beats antique? imagine them being better at the "PLAY EVERY INSTRUMENT THAT SOUNDS ETHNIC, EVEN IF WE JUST BOUGHT IT BECAUSE IT LOOKS COOL" thing and being really, really goddamn trippy. and real slow. and without zoe in antlers.

if you are on the fence about this, listen to khora first and then start the album over again from the beginning. khora is astonishing. and in KEEP IT POSI major key.

Pelican - The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw 2005

this ranks up with jesu s/t. the more i try to rank my most important albums, the more i feel like i just wade deeper and deeper into similar genre territory. which i am largely fine with.

this band is one of the few that i will always, always go to see live, regardless of recent albums or lineup changes or anything. the first time i saw them was probably still...well...one of my top two dates of all time (at least for me. the other was the FUCKING SCIENCE MUSEUM). openers are usually completely superficial (except tombs, holy shit), and then fucking pelican wades out, looking like malnourished williamsburgians, with a bottle of fancy wine each, and without a word, just fucking pllllaaaaayyy mmuuuussssiiicccc for at least 90 minutes. its better than any church, if you were someone that ever got anything out of going to church.

this album is their best. i gave a 15 minute presentation on sirius for an honors music class once after drawing a genre flowchart on the entire board that attempted to describe the combination of sounds, musical ideas, subgenres, and timbres one could identify in pelican for the completely uninitiated. my inspiration for the flowchart was the fact that for a couple years at least, MA referred to the band's genre as "progressive melodic drone sludge", which gives me a half-stock every time i hear it just out of sheer brilliance. also i made a handout for the rest of the class, that included both a graphical time line and breakdown of the song itself and the quote

“Whereas earlier material was imbued in a minor-chorded wall of sound, Pelican aimed skyward in full embrace of major keys and overtly uplifting melodies.”

which was not mine, but holy buttfuck i wish it had been.

the worst part of this album is that march to the sea is not march into the sea, the far, far better 20 minute version only available on the single. on the other hand, the single is thuuuper worth having too, because (gigantic fucking surprise) JK broad-dick wades in to lend some ambiance to angel tears. and the cover art of the single is fuckin cool, if you are gay for clouds. i am gay for clouds. just look at it.

plus "march into the sea" is much better than "march to the sea", unless you are still really into sherman's tactical plan for the south.

listen to it, loud and straight through.

U.K. Decay - For Madmen Only 1981

U.K. Decay are one of those bands that I feel like gets overlooked as far as deathrock is concerned, but they are one of my favorites. Started out as a British punk band in the seventies and were one of the first to make the switch to the more gothic sound. With that being the case, they retained a lot of their punk roots to make this album full of both dark sounds as well as punk's speed and rhythms. This is the bands first goth release, I believe, and has a great dark, reverby, eerie feel. Lots of Satan here, too, so get on it.

Buried at Sea - Migration 2003

i heard they write everything on acoustic guitars. super, super heavy. the beginning of 1 is soooo cool, right when the feedback peaks and resolves and he just goes "*inhale* BBBLLLLEEEEAAAAAAAARRRHHHHHH!!!! *inhale* BBBLLLEEEEEAAAAAAARRRRRRRRR *inhale* WHHHHHAAAAAAA *inhale* DDDDAAAAAAAAAAAAAEEEEEHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!"

so, so cool. very draining.

Solar Fields

Solar Fields is a Swedish electronic-ambient musician who has an enormous talent for making songs that can exist in the background without being forgettable - the most important quality of ambient music. Some of his stuff is particularly slow or not terribly interesting, so I've cherry-picked a couple of his better songs.

He also created the soundtrack for Mirror's Edge, which was absolutely incredible. Fast-paced, minimalist electronic that easily stands on its own.

Dead Swans - Sleepwalkers 2009

hardcore, like carpathian. not the classic kind, the thrashy, churning kind that's always about failed relationships and suicide and the decay of cities that applies to anyone that has ever had a bad day.

like all of these albums, and i do mean all, it uses the phrase "let you down" like a million fucking times, but i dont mind.

Veil Of Maya - The Common Man's Collapse 2008

the more road trips anywhere i take, the more i fucking love VoM. and i already love them a LOT.

[most recent is here, under stealth mode]

i highly recommend never, ever getting in a car with me driving and playing any of their music. because i memorized it, and need both feet for the kick drums and at least one hand to tap guitar parts, and our adventure will be 50% on the rumble strips in the shoulder and 100% fucking dead because i crashed the car on purpose when the right riff shows up and it's like FUCKING RAAAAAAAGE HOW DO YOU FUCKERS NOT KNOW THIS SONG? TIME TO DIE.

i. love. veil of maya. seeing them headline on my 20th birthday with about 15 tweens total in attendance with brett was iiiiiinsane. this band. so good.

also this album follows the departure of the 2nd guitarist who was on all things set aside. it's tech-death/metalcore, dont you have to replace all your members to function fully live? hell no. they just had one dude play EVERYTHING with a fucking loop pedal. while telling jokes to the drummer and dodging thrown drumsticks. in the middle of a song. phenomenal.

Mighty Sphincter - The New Manson Family 1986

IT'S A DEATHROCK DECEMBER TWOFER!

This band is fucking dark, evil, fun, and from the desert. Really solid deathrock band all around. Probably my favorite album by the band, though Ghost Walking is a close second... Either way, what you have here is an album full of evil sounding guitar, awesome tones all around, reverby vocals, lyrics about cutting dicks off, Helter Skelter, and most importantly, Charlie. Also, if the cover doesn't sell you on the album, you're broken. A389 Records, aka the best current record label, will actually be releasing their first album (7"?) in years in not too long I believe, so quick! Download this and impress all your friends before deathrock is the new dubstep!

T.S.O.L. - Dance With Me 1981

One of my top albums of all time, easily. Should be one of yours too.

T.S.O.L. were one of the first West Coast Hardcore bands around, and they fucking rule. Allegedly they were really violent back in the day, too, but that is neither here nor there. Their early albums were pretty schizophrenic from album to album, sometimes just hardcore, sometimes deathrock, sometimes weird goth rock, the whole spread. Then Jack Grisham left and they turned into some like '80's butt rock band and sucked.

But again, neither here nor there. This album, however, combines the feroscity of the early hardcore scene with the campy, tongue 'n cheek playfulness of deathrock, along with its dark elements. This is the album that got them recognized as "the West Coast Misfits" playing tracks like Code Blue about necrophilia, which will forever be one of my absolute favorite songs, and Silent Scream which sounds like Grisham just wrote while he was watching Dracula, which totally rules. Title track is evil and fast, too. So if you like necrophilia and horror movies and punching people in the face, listen to this album all of the time.

The Forgotten Archetype

so its two kids (like, they might be 20ish now?) from oregon. beyond that it's kind of hard to describe. pretty much every kind of vocals ever used in any genre ever, mixed with a lot of drum machines and death metal and pop and white boy rap and bleeding through-esque wanky 2step breakdowns and coral symphonic arrangements and vocoders and R&B and cello noodling.

this is pretty much the logical evolution of the internet in musical form. the lyrics range from peter pan, to being vegeta, to playing gears of war, to trying to find fast food and shooting strangers instead.

whatever my review has made you think about what this may sound like, it sounds completely different. listen to at least some of it. the songwriting is actually really decent, and the fucker can play guitar like...i dont know. like someone whos really good at guitar. theyre really good at programming drums and singing/grunting/rapping/screeching and its generally fucking hilarious. not listening to this is a huge mistake.

PantyRaid - Minimix 2010

18:37 of new PantyRaid material. It's great, all over the place and a little weird on your first listen. Repeat listens are great though, some really loud and mean basslines, great synths and crunkalicious BEATS.

Track List:
- Brush It Off
- Run It
- Because Of You
- Purple Blues &amp
- Yo Gotti ft. Lil Wayne ‘Women Lie, Men Lie’ (PANTyRAiD remix)

Mamiffer / House Of Low Culture - Split 2010

house of low culture is aaron turner's side-project, with 2 other dudes from ISIS and one from khanate. which line-up-wise sounds like jodis, but is way, way more fluid and beautiful. mamiffer is who knows, but both songs are long and hypnotic and extremely interesting and work together really well. trip yer tits off.

4. Angels Dub (Sully Remix)

501 - The 501 EP

Kind of a different sound from this guy's previous stuff. This is more lighthearted dubstep I feel haha. And it was released on a label called NSFW. Lawlz. Dub You has a really goofball fucking vocal in it and the lyrics are cheesy as dick ha.

02. 501 - Dub You
03. 501 - Somewhere In Time
04. 501 - Bring the Styles Back

Ample Mammal - Mating Season

Similar to Girl Talk in that they're both mash-up artists but this guy's samples and synths and everything are glitched to oblivion and at some points beyond recognizability. It's a really trippy ride through this whole downtempo cd, worth a listen all the way through and deciding if you like it or not. Some tracks are glitchy to the point of incoherence but only briefly. Trapped inside a Single Cell Organism has one of the most catchy/somber synth notes ever and it's incredible. I really enjoy this album, a cover to cover listen is needed to judge it, don't try to skip around previewing the tracks.

1. We Come in Pieces
2. Wildebeest Tactics for the 21st Century

Also here is his remix of Cozza Frenzy! Glitched out, chopped up and funky, great fucking remix.

Little Dragon - Machine Dreams (2009)

Scandinavia is just hemorrhaging musical talent these days it seems, and the Swedish ensemble Little Dragon is no exception. I mentioned these guys briefly in the summer, as lead vocalist Yukimi Nagano is featured on the latest Gorillaz album, Plastic Beach.

This album is perfect for lounging out at home. I could also imagine it making for a tremendously pleasant drive in the rain. Or a walk, anywhere. Overall I'd advocate it for more low-key endeavors, though I've read that they're incredibly dance-y live. God, her voice is amazing. I could listen to it foreverrrrrrrrrrr.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm

*Note: Treal mentioned something to me about a possible remix of Empire Ants (feat. Little Dragon) by Gorillaz. I'll keep you posted.

Remember Will from Philadelphia, the kid I met in Montréal over Craigslist (don't judge me)? He's producing his own tuuunes now under the name Treal, and I thought I'd post some of his stuff here.

Arcade Fire - Sprawl II (Treal Remix) 2010

Aaaand the original:
Arcade Fire - Sprawl II 2010

Over a joint in MTL one night, we received a link to this video with directions telling us to smoke as much as we can for the first two minutes, and then to just watch. Nasa threw a camera and microphone onto one of the rocket boosters during the STS-124 launch, and the footage is remarkable. Will started working on a song to go along with it almost immediately, and he just finished it like a month ago. He threw some photos over the first two minutes, because it's really not interesting unless you have the sound from the actual recording. He used guitar samples made by his roommate Leo and had the whole thing mastered by one of the DJs for whom he interned in MTL, Tone Depth.

Yayyyyyy!

Ill-esha - Circadian Rhythms

Ill-esha provides a fantastic glitch-hop release here that showcases some really great production. Tons of little touches here and there like the horns in Smoke & Mirrors, the strings in Sullen Sultry and the "chimes" (i donno what to call them) in Hunting Season illustrate her pretty widespread influences. Lots of good basslines and plenty of layers. Jay Wikid remix is nothing special, Samples' is pretty good.

Also! Here is an Ample Mammal remix of Smoke and Mirrors and it's funky and wonderful.

Kryptic Minds - 768 / False Flag (Remix)

Oh my fucking god 768 is one of the most hypnotizing dubstep songs ever created. Listen to it with headphones with as much bass as possible. Never gets old. There's one high note that sounds like a ping that echoes right after the drop and it's fucking brilliant.

36 - Memories In Widescreen 2010

vinyl only. 36 churns out records like a sleepy, sleepy nadja. if you like being awake or cheerful, or already know you dont like ambient drone, you can stop reading.

otherwise, this is very similar to other 36 releases: quiet, looping (as opposed to more psychy fluid drone) electronic pulses and pads, and some ambient noises stretched and mashed into drones and tones. it's beautiful and LONG and it feels much, much more...i guess filling than did the sparse, cold, "freezing to death in a calm winter sea" type sound of Hollow. this album is like muting Sunshine and watching the scene where the psych officer opens the viewing window to look at the sun directly (not when he dies, but early on when he describes it as the opposite of sensory deprivation) in slow, slow, slow motion.

Say Anything - ...Is A Real Boy 2004

i love the dick out of this album, despite the fact that it was supposed to be a "rock opera", because apparently that's a thing since Queen. the writing is fucking. flawless. every song makes so much sense and flows so naturally that it's very easy to ignore some of the more retarded lyrics and whininess. if you dont have this album (you do), you probably dont/wouldnt like it, which i can totally understand too.

also i havent really liked anything else the band has done, so its difficult for me to point at exactly why i love it so hard. its pretty, and as a band they function like none other. highly, highly recommended. i think woe is my favorite, but its much easier to pick a least favorite (ugh. admit it!!!) than a favorite.

  1. "Belt" – 4:59
  2. "Woe" – 3:55
  3. "The Writhing South" – 4:46
  4. "Alive with the Glory of Love" – 4:15
  5. "Yellow Cat (Slash) Red Cat" – 5:18
  6. "The Futile" – 2:45
  7. "Spidersong" – 3:57
  8. "An Orgy of Critics" – 3:55
  9. "Every Man Has a Molly" – 3:05
  10. "Slowly, Through a Vector" – 4:40
  11. "Chia-Like, I Shall Grow" – 4:56
  12. "I Want to Know Your Plans" – 5:12
  13. "Admit It!!!" – 6:12

Venomous Concept - Retroactive Abortion 2004

got buzzo, shane embury and danny herrera from napalm death (and anaal nathrakh) playing fast as dicks hardcore/grindcore. "hard on" is one of the best 2 minutes of aggressive music i have ever heard MHHHPPGGHH especially at the half time breakdown

. and despite the singer being american, he sounds like a swede with down's syndrome falling down the stairs but that just makes it more awesome. also the clicky, dry sounding drums are mean.

apparently they have a more recent album too, so i gotta find that.

if you like this, dont forget that gerbophilia always, always do it better.

Jesu - Christmas 2010

blah blah blah no one wants to hear me fag all over jesu again, so heres the new song. its really really good. if anyone can find the lyrics, they should let me know, because all i can really discern is some shit about christmas trees and presents or stupid shit like that, and i hope im way off. also all of my speakers are blown, so it could be about putting chains on your fucking car before you get to the mountains. who knows.

BUT ALL CELEBS GOTTA MAKE THAT CHRISTMAS ALBUM

anyway. song's great (LAST 3 MINUTES!), remixes are lackluster (at least compared to the original. also, both bands providing remixes are, in fact, just broadrick in one of his many, many alter egos), but what are you going to do? not listen to it? its jesu.

1. Christmas
2. Christmas (Pale Sketcher Remix)
3. Christmas (Final Remix)

Tombs - Winter Hours 2009

its really difficult to collect my thoughts on this album, and i hope brett jumps in and says something.

to begin with, everything is fucking great. good tone, good interplay, good flow. my major problem...i think...is how the album is written/flows. like theres fast bits (great silence, easily my favorite for just how fucking RAGEFUL it is), theres the post-noodling (every song), theres the mind-shitting feedback and noise interludes (see them live)... it has everything, and it does everything well. but this could have easily been two albums with completely different attitudes.

regardless, this album is for everyone. in the world. it is amazing, and consistency issues aside, tombs fucking rule. so listen to it.

Rudimentary Peni - Death Church 1983

DEATHROCK DECEMBER FOREVER! DUBSTEP NEVER!

Rudimentary Peni is one of the greatest bands ever to exist. Seriously.

But not only that, Death Church is one of my favorite albums of all time, and one of the best deathrock releases as well. This is RP's first non-political album after Farce and a few EPs, and if you ask me it's their finest work. Super dark, super blasphemous, and pretty damn evil. 1/4 is the perfect album opener, Nick Blinko writes the best, most simple yet awesome riffs, his voice sounds fantastic, etc forever. I once read them described as "if you played played Earth A.D. at full blast in a tunnel." Hopeless and grim, yet fun and energetic. Listen to this album or you suck.

Mike Armine - Verse EP 2010

the giant skinny rosetta vocalist. its the rosetta type of drone (a la cleansing undertones of wake/lift, or the 2nd cd of galilean satellites - you know, the one that's designed to be played at the exact same time as the first disk? novel, but fucking wasteful), very electronic, some minor percussion and noise and fuzz. kind of like some stars of the lid. its good though. except it goes real fuckin quick and is over too soon.
