its less crap than last years. i probably tell that to all the years. if i had started this endeavor yesterday, it would just be the new black sheep wall album. godDAMN or the new mount eerie.
 
i tried to get LoC out of there, i really did. its such a shitty lazy gutting of the song on my part and it doesnt fit at all and i hate it and i wanted it to be amenra - boden or indian - directional or anything else but i keep getting distracted by eshopping simultaneously for an AK47 and the lego detective office set

the only part im like a+ on is BF into MSA - sister into sunburst chem. and a bunch of that is just because it triggers limbo flashbacks and fucking christ that fucking game

oh and i sat for like 2 weeks trying to decide between echoes of yul - last, echoes of yul - last (echoes of yul version), and cult of luna - passing through (echoes of yul version), and just gave up suuuuper hard when i figured out that the remix of last played backwards over the original kinda sorta synched and made a new, hybrid species of unsubtle, atmosphere-wrecking fuckery that sounds great followed by planning for burial.

i cant tell if it actually flows at all or if its just a ton of songs i really like in a row but there you go. headphones help a lot (and they are needed for holifernes/lavender) (and i cant quite get it to render as an mp3 at the exact levels it espouses as an acid project, so...its quieter and more muddled than it should be? and 75% more disappointing than it should be)(and i listened to it with normal headphones at work and it fucking sounds like 8 bags of shit ass because my waveforms arent behaving but im done with this shit)

Ludique - ludique

Ambient / IDM / Techno (their labels, not mine) out of the Netherlands. Sound kind of like Trentemøller at times, though not quite as polished or consistent. Still, they're only students, so they have a lot of potential. On this album, they've apparently decided to name their songs using madlibs, with titles including "Flabbergasm," "Sex Madness," and "Banana Joe is going bananas."

Nightfall

The other songs can be good, but also occasionally wander into weird territories. Still, worth a listen as they do some interesting things.

Ryan

Ryan is an incredible short film about Ryan Larkin, an influential animator during the early 70s who battled alcoholism and drug abuse for most of his life. The techniques used are brilliant, especially considering the fact that no motion-capture was used in its making, but Ryan's real importance comes from the window it gives into the life of its subject.


Christ does that sound sanitized beyond belief. Someone get me on Amazon. But seriously, its 14 minutes long, the director describes the style as 'psychorealism,' and the film is intensely meaningful. Give it a shot.

Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt - DJ Shadow
DJ Shadow has a lot of interesting music, most (all?) of it relying heavily on samples. This song stood out overall, although Organ Donor and Stem are also solid.

Colder - Bitcrush
Above average ambient-type stuff for a while, and then Bitcrush tries to become Ben Frost and does a decent job of it.

Dayvan Cowboy - Boards of Canada
The first half of the video does a much better job of reflecting the feel of the song than I ever could. The first half of the video consists of Joseph Kittinger's jump, and the song just gets...warm after that. In a good way.

Everything is Alright - Four Tet
Sounds like something you'd play over a montage about graphic artists.

Let the Light In - Lens
Has a cool atmospheric sound.

Parks on Fire - Trifonic
Interesting song with a neat video. Has more variety than most of the ambient stuff I hear.

Tepid Coat - Damiak
This song kind of reminds me of Explosions in the Sky. Damiak was also part of the n5md label, Bitcrush is responsible for the guitar in this song. The linked page has a minute or so of the 7-minute song, I couldn't find anything longer anywhere else.

The Launching of Big Face - Plaid & Bob Jaroc
+1000000 points for the song name, but the song itself sounds like...curiosity? Can songs do that? I'm blanking on any other applicable term. This is one of my favorite non-NT songs.

Wurlitzer - The Lushlife Project
Similar to Let The Light In, not quite as atmospheric.




This soundtrack is from a Half-Life 2 mod called Neotokyo. The mod is heavily influenced by Ghost in the Shell, so it's no surprise that these songs sound like cyberpunk future. This OST is incredible, had Ed Harrison done it for an actual game and not a mod he probably would have won a couple of awards.
