fly Dying - Melancholia 2012

imagine a combination of early scorn, early tycho, a few horror movies, and runhild gammelsaeter.

if you can.

it kind of feels like the silent jill OST on hallucinogenic steroids. the 'maudlin woman rambling' vocals are kind of distracting (....or obnoxious), but it's cool.

Pavel Dovgal - Cassiopeia 2010

update: this is paul's from 12/13/10, but i never got it before he removed the link following our proxy war with that one asshole. i have a different review, but if you just read the track titles and know that the last song (LA) is half of a fancy mike song, youll get the idea.

Background-y dubstep, feels like intermission music or something. It's really fuckin short though so it's not hard to give it a listen. I quite like Sacred Chants of Shiva. The genre tag on one of the digital outlets carrying this calls it "Skweee/Wonky/Aquacrunk". Lolwut? I certainly didn't feel trapped in an aquarium or felt it was particularly drippy/bubbly/wet. But now I am determined to find tr00 aquacrunk.

Admiral Angry - A Fire To Burn Down The World EP 2010

from the band:

Alright,

Since I don't have nearly enough time to respond to the e-mails about "the future of admiral" and since I don't want to play favorites, you ALL get to find out at the same time. August 15th we pack our amps and guitars and head to Wet 'n Dry studios to finally record A Fire to Burn Down the World. Soon after, the album will be packaged and distributed by Shelsmusic.

For those of you who are unaware of the situation the band is in, Daniel Kraus (or to those who knew him, THE Admiral) passed away earlier this year leaving us with one last piece of material, which is A Fire. This is not Buster pt. 2, nor is it ten songs sloppily put together to be forgotten. It's a mammoth of an album. One 30 minute long song, meant to punish you for all the bad things you've done in your bedroom. A Fire is not meant for everyone, but is being released for the one person that had the determination to set this world ablaze before he left it.

As for the aftermath, we are still determining whether we will be playing specific shows that have been offered to us...the main obstacle being funding. We are all honored by the surprising response to Buster, by both the fans and the media.

Finally, as a reminder, ALL of the profits earned from "Buster" and "A Fire to Burn Down the World" will be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis fund. As it was, and as it always will be, we hope you find our music most unpleasant.

Graciela Maria - Many Places (2011)

I talked about this album last month, but here's a recap: This is Graciela Maria's debut album. She grew up in Mexico City, where she deeply integrated herself into the local electronic scene. She met Robot Koch in 2009, and he featured her in a few of his tracks, which is how I initially heard of her. When I heard Many Places was produced by Robot Koch and Sneaky (who I'd never heard of before now), I expected all of the tracks to be heavily influenced by the glitchy dubstep RK has been releasing. Listening to Sneaky now for the first time, it's easy to see how this album manages to reach such a perfect blend of electronic and acoustic styles.

1. Santa Ana Afternoons 3:18
2. Many Places 3:57
3. Meanwhile 4:03
4. Magic Bus 3:56
5. Underwater 4:53
6. Little White Shoes 2:35
7. Nothing Safe 3:19
8. Through The Night 3:43
9. Always 3:34
10. Sirius 2:57

Ill-esha - Black Ice (Part 1 - North America Excursion)

A more downtempo, "softer" release. Still really great at loud volumes and during mindless internet surfing. Someone's singing in this and I lourve it.

Ample Mammal - Mating Season

Similar to Girl Talk in that they're both mash-up artists but this guy's samples and synths and everything are glitched to oblivion and at some points beyond recognizability. It's a really trippy ride through this whole downtempo cd, worth a listen all the way through and deciding if you like it or not. Some tracks are glitchy to the point of incoherence but only briefly. Trapped inside a Single Cell Organism has one of the most catchy/somber synth notes ever and it's incredible. I really enjoy this album, a cover to cover listen is needed to judge it, don't try to skip around previewing the tracks.

1. We Come in Pieces
2. Wildebeest Tactics for the 21st Century
3. Blocked Friend Request
4. Benjamin Beemin'
5. Future Versus Calculator
6. Spacecrunkadelix
7. Set Yourself on Fire (Musclehawk)
8. The End of Fluorescent
9. Death by Sex in the Marine Environment
10. Trapped in a Single Celled Organism
11. Pushing Time
12. The Atmosphere
13. Spacecrunkadelix Pt. 2
14. Florida Slowdown

Also here is his remix of Cozza Frenzy! Glitched out, chopped up and funky, great fucking remix.

Little Dragon - Machine Dreams (2009)

Scandinavia is just hemorrhaging musical talent these days it seems, and the Swedish ensemble Little Dragon is no exception. I mentioned these guys briefly in the summer, as lead vocalist Yukimi Nagano is featured on the latest Gorillaz album, Plastic Beach.

This album is perfect for lounging out at home. I could also imagine it making for a tremendously pleasant drive in the rain. Or a walk, anywhere. Overall I'd advocate it for more low-key endeavors, though I've read that they're incredibly dance-y live. God, her voice is amazing. I could listen to it foreverrrrrrrrrrr.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm

*Note: Treal mentioned something to me about a possible remix of Empire Ants (feat. Little Dragon) by Gorillaz. I'll keep you posted.

Ill-esha - Circadian Rhythms

Ill-esha provides a fantastic glitch-hop release here that showcases some really great production. Tons of little touches here and there like the horns in Smoke & Mirrors, the strings in Sullen Sultry and the "chimes" (i donno what to call them) in Hunting Season illustrate her pretty widespread influences. Lots of good basslines and plenty of layers. Jay Wikid remix is nothing special, Samples' is pretty good.

1. Smoke & Mirrors
2. Cold Hands
3. Sullen Sultry
4. Hunting Season
5. Stutterfly
6. Bedbug
7. Cold Hands (Jay Wikid Remix)
8. Sullen Sultry (Samples Remix)

Let's see her if she's ever in town

Also! Here is an Ample Mammal remix of Smoke and Mirrors and it's funky and wonderful.

classic, cold, sparse quiet dubstep style that makes you feel like you are drunk and cold all goddamn day.

Parvata - A Thousand Paper Cranes (2010)

For those of you who know Alex Hart, I only found this because he posted it to Coren's Facebook wall yesterday. Parvata is a recent project of his friend, Alan Steenblock from either Denver (according to his MySpace) or the Springs (according to his Bandcamp). One of those... Whatever, the point is that he's a friend of a friend and this album is really impressive. This is his first one I believe, and he just released it November 8th.

I don't like likening new artists to other ones, but this guy reminds me of a more downtempo, psychedelic Ratatat. You can't really go wrong with any of that. The beats are sick, as are the basslines, the layering is wonderfully-orchestrated, and it's all super catchy.

Highlights would have to be Sunshine, A Thousand Paper Cranes, StrapZ Brew, and Dreams.

You should really give this guy a listen/download.

Tipper - Broken Soul Jamboree

This is the most mellow, somber, relaxing downtempo release from Tipper and it has a noticeable absence of rap battling frogs. Instead, I imagined myself floating down an incandescent river on an enormous lilly pad composed entirely of fractals, face down, tops of my fingers drifting through the water, with hidden mechanical frogs and other jungle animals shitting lasers and croaking wobbles at me while I indolently drifted past crystal forests, glass vegetation and frozen marshes. The song Dead Soon pretty much sums that description up. I wish this was the background music for FFXIII.

01 - Big Question Small Head
02 - Cuckoo
03 - Class 5 Roaming Vapour
04 - Brocken Spectre
05 - Dead Soon
06 - Cinder Cone

Pretty Lights - Glowing in the Darkest Night EP (2010)

This EP was released Friday. It's not incredibly unique from Pretty Lights' past few releases, but if you've been getting down on those, you'll definitely dig this one. Favorites off this would have to be Gazing at the Glare and So Much in the Dark. Gold Coast Hustle is good too...

Download it (and all his other stuff) for free here.

edIT - Crying Over Pros For No Reason 2004

fucking rad shit. i really wish he had kept doing this, because air raid material had one fucking drum pattern. WHUH OHHHH, FORESHADOWING FOR THE REST OF GLITCH MOBS FUTURE EFFORTS. but it is AMAZING glitchy shit. like...fuck...tycho exploded but the explosion was in slow motion and some dude had his hand on the knob that made really good glitch music but it was already set to 11 and he never touched it. ....so his hand wasnt really on it at all.

Haven't heard Black Sands all the way through yet, but a coworker was playing it at work this morning. So far, it's AMAZING. Download it here.

Who wants to check him out with me in November?
