Katy B - On A Mission 2011

turns out you can completely sidestep the whole 'compete with ellie goulding' thing by making dubstep to begin with. magnetic man shows up a lot, both explicitly and with benga producing.

this isnt the right tracklist for the link, but its close.

i cant use 'house' as a tag because dodd ruined it with his first post; it always shows up as 'House' now and, well...never compromise, even in the face of armageddon.

1. "Power on Me" 4:21
2. "Katy on a Mission" 4:11
3. "Why You Always Here" 5:33
4. "Witches' Brew" 3:20
5. "Movement" 2:41
6. "Go Away" 3:35
7. "Disappear" 3:38
8. "Broken Record" 3:19
9. "Lights On" (featuring Ms. Dynamite) 3:28
10. "Easy Please Me" 3:56
11. "Perfect Stranger" (with Magnetic Man) 3:13
12. "Hard to Get" 6:53
13. "Water" (Bonus hidden track) 3:14

points for a wonderful, wonderful band name and cover art. for jeremy, who loves reverb: two sale-looking russians playing fuzzy garage pop.

Cold Cave - Cherish the Light Years (2011)

New Cold Cave album. Even better mix of Joy Division worship and poppy 80's boner jamz. Of course it's great, it's a Cold Cave album.

Prepare to dance your butt-face off.

Say Anything - ...Is A Real Boy 2004

i love the dick out of this album, despite the fact that it was supposed to be a "rock opera", because apparently that's a thing since Queen. the writing is fucking. flawless. every song makes so much sense and flows so naturally that it's very easy to ignore some of the more retarded lyrics and whininess. if you dont have this album (you do), you probably dont/wouldnt like it, which i can totally understand too.

also i havent really liked anything else the band has done, so its difficult for me to point at exactly why i love it so hard. its pretty, and as a band they function like none other. highly, highly recommended. i think woe is my favorite, but its much easier to pick a least favorite (ugh. admit it!!!) than a favorite.

  1. "Belt" – 4:59
  2. "Woe" – 3:55
  3. "The Writhing South" – 4:46
  4. "Alive with the Glory of Love" – 4:15
  5. "Yellow Cat (Slash) Red Cat" – 5:18
  6. "The Futile" – 2:45
  7. "Spidersong" – 3:57
  8. "An Orgy of Critics" – 3:55
  9. "Every Man Has a Molly" – 3:05
  10. "Slowly, Through a Vector" – 4:40
  11. "Chia-Like, I Shall Grow" – 4:56
  12. "I Want to Know Your Plans" – 5:12
  13. "Admit It!!!" – 6:12

Mujuice - Cool Cool Death (2007)

So I thought today that maybe I'd step out of my norm a little bit and post a really awesome foreign minimalist IDM producer...

I know I add a myriad of these assholes to this blag, but I wouldn't do it if I didn't genuinely think they were awesome and at least worth checking out.

So Mujuice is this Russian dude who makes really space-y/glitchy electronic muzyka using a lot of samples and this fucking cool instrument thing that he controls by waving his hands over it. He does his own vocals too. If you like Free the Robots, you'll dig this guy. Here's a video of one of his live performances, he looks like he's got the trashy "pOsT-eMo" Skrillex thing going on, but we forgive Mujuice, just as we do Skrillex, because he's fucking good. Only Mujuice is a little less gay. In my opinion.

Flashlight Brown - My Degeneration 2003

really, really goddamn hilarious album. less of title fight pop punk, more like blink 182 pop punk (most of the songs are about being in elementary - middle - high school - a band), but with better written songs. surprisingly hard to find now. butterball, a freak, and today are fucking great songs. but so are all the others on the cd.

Psyched to Die - Sterile Walls (2009)

Psyched to Die is a band that came from the ashes of The Ergs!, For Science and other such midwest pop punk bands. This is the opposite. Psyched to Die's sound is reminiscent of early 90's hardcore, mixed with the speed and thrash of the 80's hardcore/pv sound. Super melodic, super good!

Included in this download is the 2008 demo as well.

JEFF the Brotherhood - Heavy Days (2009)

Imagine your dad when he was 22 years old; worshiping the Beach Boys and Dick Dale, trying to emulate The Stooges and surfing every fucking day. Dear ol' dad sweating it out in his parents garage on summer vacation with his pals, that's what this album sounds like.

Phantogram - Eyelid Movies (2010)

So I saw this band play at Casa del Popolo, a little dive(ish) bar on St-Laurent here in Montréal-- an amazing live performance. They're a two-piece band from Saratoga Springs, New York and late last year they signed onto Barsuk Records (Maps & Atlases, Death Cab, Menomena, Rocky Votolato, Rilo Kiley, etc...)! If you have any kind of affinity for simple, chill, girl-fronted iNdIeTrOnIcA bandzzzz, you'll definitely dig this.

Maps & Atlases - Perch Patchwork 2010

Stealing from Duncan, because I am their unofficial #1 superfan/fanboy.

Words cannot describe how excited I was for this album to drop (yes, i just said "drop" referring to an album's release date). First full length by probably my favorite new and active band=wet dream. Huge wet dream. I also pre-ordered this within an hour of the pre-order going up so i got a signed insert and some pins and shit for free. Even bigger wet dream. I also finally got to see them for the first time earlier this month after being foiled from seeing them the 3 times they've come to Denver and it was EVERYTHING I could have hoped for, including microphones being shoved in my face because i was screaming EVERY GODDAMN WORD right in front. Religious experience. But that is neither hear nor there.

Since I've gotten this album, my iTunes tells me i have listened to this album a minimum of 16 times, all the way through. my actual count is even higher because i still have the CD in my car. Needless to say, this album is super awesome.

Comparing it to their earlier recordings, it is a lot less technical as a whole, but is still very technical in areas (see: Pidgeon). Their musicianship and songwriting is topnotch as ever on this one. The cost for this recording must have doubled the price of each EP as well; HUGE sound. That is not necessarily a good thing though, because i loved the simplicity of their first 2, production-wise. To be honest, i kind of got tired of the HUGE orchestral arrangements and sound and wanted to retreat back into Big Bopper Anthems or something. Sound wise, this album kind of sounds like they picked up right where they left off, but listened to Vampire Weekend and The Black Keys while recording, sounds which are evident, but not forefront throughout. Again, not necessarily needed, as their sound was unique as it was, and now i'm comparing one of my favorite bands to a band I love to hate. NONETHELESS! this album is a bit different, a bit poppier, a bit more sing along-esque, and is a whole lot of fun. Everyone should listen to it for the rest of their lives. And if the string arrangements start to wear on you like they did with me after listening to it so many times, imagine them playing it live, sans cheesy arrangements and just meeeeeeeeeeeeellllllllllltttttttttt.
