Rot In Hell - Hallways of the Always 2009

This is Integrity worship at its finest. Some of the meanest, rawest, coldest hardcore out there. Listen and see for yourself.

It's got high speeds, ballsy break downs, and beautiful acoustic parts/outro track. Not to mention awesome sampling and great noise. All around, great record, great band, great audio-terrorism. I also recommend purchasing either the 12" or the CD because the art is also fantastic.

Sweet Cobra - Mercy 2010

ahhhh i really like sweet cobra. they have a perfect interplay between instruments, dynamics, and progression. and it is very, very interesting. like old baroness playing punk rock. one of my biggest regrets in recent memory is going to a show where they were opening and showing up RIGHT when they were almost done with spider scraper which is a fucking unbelievable song. and not on this album. but still.

sweet cobra is really, really fucking good. way better than black cobra (and certainly better live), so dont get confused.

Scientist - Scientist Launches Dubstep Into Outer Space 2010

SCIENTIST. the guy who pretty much created dub (for me, at least. scientist rids the world of the curse of the vampires is the ultimate dub/reggae album ever created, and will likely show up on the blog shortly) comes back to toy with the purist-genre of actual dubstep (as opposed to...i guess bare, and all the other shitty angry boystep) and nukes the shit out of it. be warned, do not expect bangers. this is more dub-oriented dubstep, and scientist tooling around only makes it more so. the most popular/accessible song, to me, is probably Korg Back, so at least listen to that one before you go OH SHIT THIS IS BORING, IM GOING TO PUT MY BEAR CLAWS UP AND HOPE SOMEONE TAKES THREE PICTURES AND THEN FAILS AT DOING ANYTHING OF NOTE, EVER.

fuck you bare. you are complete shit.

also, hey, its the j. sparrow song i mentioned earlier. also 2012 is rad as hell.

Singles!

i will use gifs for reviews. i think these should all be right click/save as. severe thanks to rub a dub dubb for most of these.

1. Bassnectar - Boombox (Datsik Rmx)

is this one old? youve probably all heard it. novel take on a superior original.

http://www.rub-a-dub-dubbb.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Boombox-Datsik-Remix.mp3

2. Shorterz & Enigma ft. Little Palm - Rag Doll

this is really pretty and fun. plus in the chorus when she says "you took away my motivation, left me in isolation, took away my dedication", you think like OMG this girl fell like super hard for this guy who isnt that into her. but it kind of sounds like she says "took away my medication", which then turns this into a tragic tale of hillbilly love-hell.

http://www.rub-a-dub-dubbb.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Rag-Doll.mp3

3. Zeds Dead - Rude Boy (Union Rmx)

gif sums it up. durty vobbles AND drum and bass! although the DnB is kind of tacked on and it sounds pretty different from the first half. Zeds Dead - December 29th at Cervantes!

4. Bassnectar & Datsik - YES

oh christ this song is flawless. listening to it feels like this:

8. Avalanches - Tonight (Commix Remix)

oh gawd this is like the coolest, classiest mellow DnB ive ever heard. like, you can probably dance, but youd be better off nodding along with a martini.

9. Medison - Harry (Bare Noize Rmx)

so this is my alarm on my phone now, and every morning there are three points or more where im dreaming and suddenly it goes psscht-Now let me tell you 'bout-BRR WHEEE DURRNNNUHNUHNUH NRR NRR, DURRNNNUHNUHNUH NRR NRR, DURRNNNUHNUHNUH NRR NRR. and im all like FUUUUUUUUUU

http://www.mediafire.com/?pcoq6zjftcmbvfw

10. J Sparrow - Way Out West

finally, there is this very, very cold song, which is going in the stay frosty mix if it kills me. also that mix will never get made. but holy shit this song is mean, like kito - cold. also the scientist compilation im about to post has another really good song by jack sparrow (which i can only assume is also j. sparrow) called red sand. GET COLD AND STAY COLD. this gif is courtesy of a google search for "gay cold .gif", because there weren't any good ones of stone cold steve austin unloading on dudes.

Eibon - Entering Darkness 2010

fucking heavy as hell. deep growls, deep riffs, really good post metal work. sounds like kowloon walled city playing with humanfly circa II. heavier than a really heavy thing.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9Y9314EG

Killing The Dream - Lucky Me 2010

got some really pretty and well put together hardcore/screamo, with real dynamics! like a high speed envy, but not a lot of noodling/skramz bits. melodic and sad and fast and pissed and desperate. highly recommended. like a slower defeater with a delay pedal. really goddamn good. too short.

2. Walking, Diseased
3. Testimony

All Pigs Must Die - S/T 2010

kinda generic like...thrash-core? is that a thing? clean production, real loud thrash vocals, great riffs and solos and shit, great cover art and band logo, but something about this is kind of off. i think it might be the levels. or how clean it sounds. or how loud the vocals are. the songs are all great but i wish they sounded as mean as they are. like, distort everything. je ne sais pas. play it loud, play it fast, play with the equalizer yourself.

update: i think i kind of figured it out. it feels like the actual music doesnt so much move as it does fill the pauses between lyrics. this is probably just a levels issue.

2. Sermon for the End
3. Die Ignorant

Earth - A Bureaucratic Desire for Extra Capsular Extraction 2010

some older material collated and repackaged. really nice to hear all this in one place. if you are used to hex/bees made honey earth, listen to this. kurt cobain sings on divine and bright, from the ep sunn amps and smashed guitars. its very heavy and not very ambient and it think its all from near 1990.

LISTEN TO IT! earth is worth everything.

Barn Owl - Ancestral Star 2010

like a noodlier Earth - Hex. or like a less weird and hit-or-miss master musicians of bukkake. not really sleepy drone, more mushrooms-drone. it has inspired me to post more jackie-o, though, because i dont think anyone downloaded flags of the sacred harp when i posted it, and they are much better at noise-drone.

back to barn owl, they are better than run DMT or plankton wat or master musicians of bukkake. very fluid, very solid album as a whole, but the individual songs arent much. you could sleep to this if you can sleep to drums. its pretty fucking good, either way. like an aggressive Hex, or a more cerebral grails, as though that were a thing.

1. Sundown
2. Visions in Dust
3. Night's Shroud
4. Ancestral Star
5. Cavern Hymn

Alpinist - Lichtlærm 2010

like a melodic Knut. like Century, if all their songs didnt sound the same and they played with noise and shit, but half of the album is fucking interludes and not that interesting. and instead of recognizing the good parts of the album (the crust beat and sludge riffs) and using that to actually make an album, most of it goes fucking nowhere. its like really bad post rock, as played by converge. come to think of it, i dont know why im posting it, and im probably about to delete it off my computer. neverest is good though.

review: i may have been hasty. a lot of the songs in here are mean as shit.

Salome - Terminal 2010

salome is fucking MEAN. female vocals i think, and they are some of the most furious i have ever heard. i would love to see this live, and apparently they used to play with like dark castle and isis and all those rad bands.

the album is really really downtuned prog-doomsludge kinda shit, sounds like a mix of rye wolves, discharge, and black sheep wall with amazing vocals. the fast sludge punk bits are rad.

4. Epidemic

The Body - All the Waters of the Earth Shall Turn to Blood 2010

terrifying and weird and angry and slow. sounds like an album full of black sheep wall interludes, but definitely unique. lots of screaming and noise over lots of weird samples and production and filters. really goddamn interesting.

http://www.mediafire.com/?z5mw01tgxgucc1r

Salem - King Night 2010

this one is kind of hard to explain. really really fuzzy, drum machine and synth driven drone-step pop witch house. it is really really beautiful, like crystal castles on a benzo overdose. killer is one of my favorite songs of all time. hound, redlights, and the title track are all really good too. its hard to suggest a specific time to listen to this, but it is highly recommended either way.

Nyktalgia - S/T 2004

Because I just remembered I've never put it up, and I'm pretty much done with Black Metal November, this is first from the impending list to be posted. This is one of the best black metal albums ever. The songwriting is amazing and very melodic, the songs are long which allow them to actually go places and progress and change tempo and riff like a billion times, the vocals are something I cannot imagine ever coming out of a human being, the levels of each instrument are perfect, the drumming is flawless, and it makes you want to die.

4 minutes44seconds into Exitus Letalis is the most depressing and/or horrifying part of any song I have ever heard. The drums stop and he just starts fucking shrieking. I have had many, many strange moments in my life with that playing in the background.

Mike Sheridan - I Syv Sind (2008)

Okay, so let me start off by saying, fucking CHRIST this album is incredible. Trentemøller has probably been my favorite Danish electronic producer for a while, but Mike Sheridan has undoubtedly just stolen that title. At LEAST that title. I mean, I'm listening to this album right now and losing my fucking shit. My god.

So Mike Sheridan's gotta be the youngest electronic producer right now. He was born in Copenhagen in 1991 and released this album only weeks before his seventeenth birthday. It won the Danish Grammy for "Best Electronica Album" in '08. I believe he's got a second album due to be released here before the end of the year, and he's doing the film score for a major Swedish film called "Fuerteventura".

A lot of fucking awesome noises and orchestral swooshes (yes, that's proper terminology). Glitchy at times, drone-y at others, always very melodic and interesting. He's got some vocals in a few songs. I don't know how to describe it.

Favorite track so far is Stilhed. dskafj;djsfa;lskdjfa;lsdkfasdf

Seigneur Voland - Final Stand 2003

so im really glad my french is terrible, because this is one of the most nazi-humping black metal bands ive ever heard. but they have good tone, and a strangely minimalist traditional-yet-melodic black metal approach. the first four songs are the only ones really worth listening to, though.

i fucking hate nazis. their lyrical themes are listed as "Satanism, Pagan Cults, Antisemitism". cmon guys. no one does that.

Parvata - A Thousand Paper Cranes (2010)

For those of you who know Alex Hart, I only found this because he posted it to Coren's Facebook wall yesterday. Parvata is a recent project of his friend, Alan Steenblock from either Denver (according to his MySpace) or the Springs (according to his Bandcamp). One of those... Whatever, the point is that he's a friend of a friend and this album is really impressive. This is his first one I believe, and he just released it November 8th.

I don't like likening new artists to other ones, but this guy reminds me of a more downtempo, psychedelic Ratatat. You can't really go wrong with any of that. The beats are sick, as are the basslines, the layering is wonderfully-orchestrated, and it's all super catchy.

Highlights would have to be Sunshine, A Thousand Paper Cranes, StrapZ Brew, and Dreams.

You should really give this guy a listen/download.

Tipper - Broken Soul Jamboree

This is the most mellow, somber, relaxing downtempo release from Tipper and it has a noticeable absence of rap battling frogs. Instead, I imagined myself floating down an incandescent river on an enormous lilly pad composed entirely of fractals, face down, tops of my fingers drifting through the water, with hidden mechanical frogs and other jungle animals shitting lasers and croaking wobbles at me while I indolently drifted past crystal forests, glass vegetation and frozen marshes. The song Dead Soon pretty much sums that description up. I wish this was the background music for FFXIII.

Agalloch - Marrow Of The Spirit 2010

i have been waiting for this for so fucking long. and it pays off. their frustratingly lengthy hiatus worked, it seems. welcome winter. beautiful intro and outro (that kinda rips off some kronos quartet), amazing first song.

interestingly enough, the production is really reminiscent of pale folklore. which is fucking awesome.
