U.K. Decay - For Madmen Only 1981

U.K. Decay are one of those bands that I feel like gets overlooked as far as deathrock is concerned, but they are one of my favorites. Started out as a British punk band in the seventies and were one of the first to make the switch to the more gothic sound. With that being the case, they retained a lot of their punk roots to make this album full of both dark sounds as well as punk's speed and rhythms. This is the bands first goth release, I believe, and has a great dark, reverby, eerie feel. Lots of Satan here, too, so get on it.

IT'S A DEATHROCK DECEMBER TWOFER!

This band is fucking dark, evil, fun, and from the desert. Really solid deathrock band all around. Probably my favorite album by the band, though Ghost Walking is a close second... Either way, what you have here is an album full of evil sounding guitar, awesome tones all around, reverby vocals, lyrics about cutting dicks off, Helter Skelter, and most importantly, Charlie. Also, if the cover doesn't sell you on the album, you're broken. A389 Records, aka the best current record label, will actually be releasing their first album (7"?) in years in not too long I believe, so quick! Download this and impress all your friends before deathrock is the new dubstep!

Rudimentary Peni - Death Church 1983

DEATHROCK DECEMBER FOREVER! DUBSTEP NEVER!

Rudimentary Peni is one of the greatest bands ever to exist. Seriously.

But not only that, Death Church is one of my favorite albums of all time, and one of the best deathrock releases as well. This is RP's first non-political album after Farce and a few EPs, and if you ask me it's their finest work. Super dark, super blasphemous, and pretty damn evil. 1/4 is the perfect album opener, Nick Blinko writes the best, most simple yet awesome riffs, his voice sounds fantastic, etc forever. I once read them described as "if you played played Earth A.D. at full blast in a tunnel." Hopeless and grim, yet fun and energetic. Listen to this album or you suck.

45 Grave - Sleep In Safety 1983

First installment of (probably too few) deathrock albums that you need to hear (because I am lazy.)

If you know me, you know I'm a big goth nerd, and nothing gets me harder than looking at pictures of Rozz Williams singing in drag and holding a crucifix, blaspheming the bible, God, Jesus, and most importantly, raising hell, all while still having fun. With that being said, Dinah Cancer and 45 Grave give me quite the chubby too.

Sleep In Safety is a quintessential deathrock release, 45 Grave being among the pioneers of the movement in the late seventies. The songs are fast, fun, and full of death, sex and rock 'n roll. There's surf, there's "shock rock", there's punk, and there's some Screamin' Jay (we'll get to him later.) Perfect mix of goth and punk. Dinah Cancer is also one of the only female vocalists I can stomach. And Party Time is probably the best song about rape ever.

Xasthur/Leviathan - Split 2004

Not enough evil on this blog lately, and it's almost winter/currently is fall, so this is unacceptable.

This is one of the best splits ever, in my opinion. You've got two of the founders of the USBM depressive, one man Black Metal genre on one album making some of the most sorrowful, sad, and beautiful music ever to be put out. Xasthur's side has a couple of repeat songs (which is the norm for him) that make the other versions seem unnecessary. Leviathan's 3 tracks are all new to the album and are equally as great as Xasthur's side. Sounds a lot different from Wrest's other tunes, but it's different in a very good way.

All together, you've got about an hour of the most bleak Black Metal the US has to offer right below. I suggest you get to listenin' and sitting alone in the dark feeling awful about everything, forever.

Clinging to the Trees of a Forest Fire - Omega Drunk on the Blood of the Alpha 2008

Teen Cthulhu - Ride the Blade (2002)

Teen Cthulhu is one of the most interesting, fucked up and chaotic hardcore/black metal band you'll ever listen to. Yeah, that's right, black metal/hardcore. FUCK YEAH TEEN CTHULHU. Also, their name comes from a Lovecraft story, which also fucking rules. Trust me, download this shit. You'll not regret it. If you do, you can beat me up. Good luck trying, you'll be too busy burning churches and moshing while listening to Ride the Blade.

Crushing the Holy Trinity & Kénôse

Deathspell pops up a lot on this blog, and for good reason: they fucking rule! This is a set of 3 splits whose purpose should be pretty evident. It consists of the first split (Father) between Aspa's Deathspell Omega AND Stabat Mater. Next (Son) is Musta Surma with Clandestine Blaze, another one of Aspa's bands that sounds like a more raw, less innovative Deathspell. Holy Spirit, the third and final addition, is between Mgla and Exordium, both of whom I had never heard of before this, but are both pretty decent black metal (Mgla more so than Exordium.) Father is easily ther best of the 3, but all are worth listening to. Dense as fuckkkkkkkkkk.

Deathspell Omega - Veritas Diaboli Manet in Aeternum: Chaining the Katechon 2008

as if dso had not become caustic enough, they started churning out 30 minute songs. i kind of like this one better than mass grave aesthetics, but theyre very similar. they both sound like they wrote five 6 minute songs and mashed them the fuck together. prepare to have the shit knocked out of your face and the meaning blasted out of your life right at 11:58 and 13:59.

Bobby Beausoleil and the Freedom Orchestra - Lucifer Rising 1981

In honor of the holidays, why not throw a little mayhem and murder into the mix?

The name Bobby Beausoleil probably doesn't mean anything to most. He was a prolific musician in the '60s psychedellic music scene of California, offering his talents to many actgs, most notably Love, a band that Jim Morrison praised as capturing the essence of psychedelics and realism. After that, he was contracted to score the short film, Lucifer Rising, in the mid '70s after Jimmy Paige was taking his sweet time with the project. He's also released several more intrumental albums since then. However, it is important to note that he released all of his music from prison while serving a term for first degree murder. To make the deal sweeter, it was the first of what would be many murders associated with Charles Manson and "The Family."

1969, Beausoleil and members of the family go to an associate of theirs, music teacher Gary Hinman, as they claim he owes Charlie and money. Now, whether that is true, and it probably wasn't, Beausoleil had had a history together of mutual musicianship and Hinman gave Beausoleil a place to crash from time to time. Bobby gets closer with the family (though never a part of it; just another musician Charlie was able to charm), Charlie says something, it is fact, boom, lets kill some bitches. Long story short, Bobby kills Hinman and steals his car, which is how he was eventually captured.

So yes, the dude is tied to one of the most infamous murders/cults in history, but with that being said, that is not just some kind of gimic; this guy is talented. The whole score of Lucifer Rising is some of the trippiest, yet most solemn and somber music I've ever heard. And to top it all off, on tracks V and VI, Bobby shreds. All of the music was written by him, most was performed by him save for drums and extra guitar, and all from prison, which I think is quite an achievement, since I know how well recording from prison can go (please see: any of Charles Manson's recordings or, better yet, Burzum's last two albums. Absolute shit.). The music fits the Aleister Crowley influence perfectly, but more than that, it's just good music. It's also a LOT fucking better than Jimmy Paige's vision. Turn it on when you drive (if your drive is 43 minutes or less), or when you just want to zone out. And if you're interested, check out his other albums. Albeit less focussed, they still display great musicianship. So, without further adue...

Stabat Mater - S/T 2009

Stabat Mater is Mikko Aspa of Deathspell Omega's latest musical endeavor (is it? how can you keep up? homie is in like 200 bands) which showcases a darker, slower, and much different sound than you are used to from things like Deathspell. The project has mostly just done splits up until now, and the release of this debut full length was a long time coming. However, I would say it was worth the wait. This is what doom should sound like; raw, powerful, dirty, fuzzy, atmospheric, and most of all, evil as fuck. Turn this on at your next sacrifice and you will have one happy Satan.
