Sommeil Sans Rêves

Knowing that your mouth isn’t always

Pulled up disingenuously at the corners

That your eyes are not always crinkled up with smiles

That there is hunger there

And that mouth is happiest, dogged

Half open

Wrecked with longing and starved with need

Ghosts N' Stuff (nero remix) - deadmau5 feat rob swire

(it's like merry and pippin, disco style!)

Nero's remix of deadmau5's "Ghosts N' Stuff" (the only deadmau5 song I can tolerate, but not the one on his most recent album, the one on "It Sounds Like") while it's too long, it beats almost any original deadmau5 song there is, unless of course you are trying to fall asleep, because thats all deadmau5 is good for. couple gnarly drops, and a pretty huge breakdown, but the song in itself gets VERY repetitive. It could easily be 4 minutes and just as good.

I can't believe I made all those "s"s, "5"s.

Braveyoung - Bloom EP 2009

The cover says it all. 'ALLO GATO!

Since the name change from Giant to Braveyoung occured, the North Carolina sludge outfit has cahnged their direction significantly. Giant is heavy and raw doom/sludge, but also beatuiful, while Braveyoung is softer and more melodic sludge/post-rock. It's stange that this change came out of just a name change, but hey, more power to 'em.

The EP is composed of 2 songs, both of which have really cool names. Upon The Boughs Which Shake Against The Cold, borrowed from Shakespeare of course, is nothing like Shakespeare, but it's still a very well constructed song. The focus goes in and out of the guitar work and the almost tribal drumming, which pulse rhythmically throughout. It's really easy to forget what you're doing while you listen to this song as it puts you in a sort of daze.

The Days That Sat In Front Of Everything, song deux, is an almost 17 minute swan song ranging from ambient sections and feedback to more tribal drumming with chanted vocals over it, to heavy sections that make you feel the days... that sat in front of everything. Powerful song, beginning to end. Powerful album beginning to end, aswell. It's perfect for background music, but it's also perfect for if you just want to absorb the music. I can't get enough of it, really. I also recommend Song by Giant for those who were hoping for something a bit heavier.

RAW DUBSTEP!!

Another one of my favorite producers, Doorly! Dude from the UK that produces some smashing remixes.

This is one of my all time favorite dubstep songs....just so grimy. Drop is massive

Good remix here too

seriously check out his other stuff too.

Chasing Shadows, 2 dudes from the UK who produce some filthy stinking dubstep. Very rawwwwww sound, so dirty it sounds like a mix between popcorn kernels in a garbage disposal and a girl scout's cunt in a blender. FILTH! blaaaaaaaaow

"It was written" is seriously one of the best dubstep choons ever created, listen and be slayed!

password = Projectlightstyle

let's hope either of these acts show up in the US sometime in the future...so far theyre primarily and solely UK based

Mirovia - Hydrogen Line 2010

It made it, with extremely variable production values. Also, one song is from Fall 08, while 3 were done in the last 3 days. Go figure.

Katatonia - Tonight's Decision - 1999

What is Katatonia? First, take doom metal in the early 90's and have the vocalist fuck the shit out of his throat. Now, chill it the fuck out. Make it fucking simple and redundant. Like pop music except less fucked. Keep some of the fucking elements of metal and make like a fucking thousand CD's that all sound the fucking same. Over time, slide down that slippery slope of mediocre fuckedness.

BUT, this is the album where it all came together. More composed that Brave Murder Day, less siily goose-ery than the current albums.

Crushing the Holy Trinity & Kénôse

Deathspell pops up a lot on this blog, and for good reason: they fucking rule! This is a set of 3 splits whose purpose should be pretty evident. It consists of the first split (Father) between Aspa's Deathspell Omega AND Stabat Mater. Next (Son) is Musta Surma with Clandestine Blaze, another one of Aspa's bands that sounds like a more raw, less innovative Deathspell. Holy Spirit, the third and final addition, is between Mgla and Exordium, both of whom I had never heard of before this, but are both pretty decent black metal (Mgla more so than Exordium.) Father is easily ther best of the 3, but all are worth listening to. Dense as fuckkkkkkkkkk.

Father
1. Deathspell Omega - Diabolus Absconditus
2. Stabat Mater - Above Him

Son
1. Musta Surma - Kalpeina Helvetin Tulessa
2. Musta Surma - Ruton Ruhtinas
3. Musta Surma - Han On Pimeys
4. Musta Surma - Valkeuden Hauras Tuhka
5. Clandestine Blaze - Intro
6. Clandestine Blaze - Destroyer Of Nations
7. Clandestine Blaze - Trophy
8. Clandestine Blaze - Behind The Faith

Holy Spirit
1. Mgla - Power And Will I
2. Mgla - Power And Will II
3. Mgla - Power And Will III
4. Mgla - Power And Will IV
5. Exordium - Ei Toivottu Vieras (Intro)/Tyrannia Martyrum
6. Exordium - Craving Vehemence
7. Exordium - Unevangel

And while I'm at it and it was requested, here is Kénôse, one of Deathspell's finest. It's dark, it's evil, it's noisey, it's colossal, but most of all, evil. 3 tracks of pure black metal chaos.

Justice - Cross

So first of all, I know this isn't exactly on par with most of the music that is being posted on here, but that is why i'm posting it, it's more mainstream, it's more house-ie, it's more french, on this blog I will be the non-conforming conformist who listens to more mainstream radio SHIT, because god dammit, that's how I roll, run-on sentences and all.

Gasper and Xavier (seriously cool names) who make up the duo known as JUSTICE, are French, obviously, since they make house music. They are Christian, whatever, i don't judge. Their debut album, CROSS, scored pretty big marks with a couple of my friends, and i'll admit that i have listened to my fair share of it over the past year.

The album starts off with GENESIS, omg just liek the first book of the bible, so creative. Anyways, it's a decent opening, which really sets the mood for the next 3 songs, (DANCE MUTHAFUCKA! ITS DISCO TIME!), and cheesily transitions into LET THERE BE LIGHT (really? another religious title?), which is MEH to say the least, it has a nice bassline (the bassline with drive the album) and some annoying highhat at the beginning which lasts too long. D.A.N.C.E. is dead for me, catchy, but whatever, WALE does a nice rap over it (seriously, check it out), but alone it is dry and overplayed. PHANTOM, parts 1 and 2, are my favorite part of the cd. Thinking about it while i listen, i don't really know WHY i like it, but i do. The beat stays relatively the same throughout, but that bassline, that fucking bassline, keeps the song moving, especially in part 2. Honestly, it really just builds off the starting material, like the rest of the songs on the album, with a huge breakdown in the middle. VALENTINE, the next song, feels like it should be playing in the background of a Mario game, whatever, DVNO works perfectly with the new haircut i just got (lololololol), listen to STRESS (aptly named, but its nothing if you have heard any "Max and the Technicolor Dreamcoat"), have a panic attack, it's even better with the music video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FU7bFpPJiww, then turn the album off, because the rest is boring. The end of WATERS OF NAZARETH isn't bad, but ONE MINUTE TO MIDNIGHT is.

I have ADHD, don't judge me. This post sucks.

Deathspell Omega - Veritas Diaboli Manet in Aeternum: Chaining the Katechon 2008

as if dso had not become caustic enough, they started churning out 30 minute songs. i kind of like this one better than mass grave aesthetics, but theyre very similar. they both sound like they wrote five 6 minute songs and mashed them the fuck together. prepare to have the shit knocked out of your face and the meaning blasted out of your life right at 11:58 and 13:59.

ISIS - Celestial and SGNL>05 EP

Heres Celestial, which I am including mostly because it sets up the EP SGNL>05. Both of these have the pre-Oceanic sound that is far more sludge and less atmosphere/progishness (although its not far off). The tone is unbelievable. Very, very low. Gentle Time hits every parameter perfectly once the sound starts oscillating around in the middle, and Celestial (The Tower) and Divine Mother (The Tower Crumbles) are amazing. The last song on SGNL>05 is a remix of Celestial (The Tower) by J Broadrick, and it sounds exactly like him a few years before Jesu started. These two albums (in addition to all other ISIS music) is very necessary listening.

also aaron turners vocals are still one of the best things to ever happen in my life.

Raunchy - Death Pop Romance 2006

i feel like raunchy gets a bad rap for being in such a generally crap genre, but these dudes fucking rule. they can write retardedly catchy songs that straddle the area between nu-metal and melo-death, and somehow it works and very rarely sucks.

i was trying to find their other album, the stone sentinels, because its a bit longer i think, but this will have to do. apparently these 3 dudes all also play in bardo pond, who are also good, but i think alasehir has a better tone. play it loud, try not to drift off too hard.

Nostalgia.

New years come and new years go faster every year, which actually seems true realative to the rest of your life. I tend to do an unnecessary amount of reminiscing on the past though, which i actually really enjoy, so before i delve into this new fangled 2010 bullshit, let me put my nostalgia pants on and fuck the shit out of my past. The best way? Mostly through music.

A couple days ago, i was bored and sitting in my room and picked up a case which held about 25 of my old CDs that i probably hadn't even thought about in at least 4 years. This led to me going through the next case, and the next case, and so on until I had flipped passed anywhere from 600-1000 of the fuckers. So much time and money has gone into filling those cases. At that time, i realized again how much of my life I associate with music. A wave of emotions and trivial details came crashing in and out of my mind. When i bought them, where i bought them, how they sound, how they made me feel, how i felt in general. Allow me to let you into my head a bit:

The Wallflowers-Bringing Down the Horse

First album I ever bought. Kindergarten, in the desert. Jakob Dylan, son of Bob, and friends. Pretty decent album, even today. Soon to come: Hanson, Prodigy, The Verve Pipe (they were only freshman. Get it?) You have to start somewhere, right?

Third Eye Blind-S/T

This one has even already been featured on this blog, but it holds a special place in my heart. First album I can remember sitting in front of a sterio and listening to repeated times in a day. I pick up a guitar and decide I want to play music as i wear out my disc.

Korn-Follow the Leader

First album I ever had to hide from my parents. It's kind of silly thinking about it now, but when you're in, what, 3rd grade, a few "fucks" and "shits", you're using headphones, always. I hate this band now, but I will still sing Freak on a Leash if i ever hear it, for sure.

Blink 182-Enema of the State

Soundtrack to my first (of many) treks through Hyrule in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Also my favorite band for a while, I guess 4th grade. I start searching for more "punk rock" when i get this. Enter several bands in the vein of NFG and the like, but also the Vandals and soon:

Misfits-Collection I

This album single handedly changed my life forever. Most important CD I own, easy. I wanted harder music, I wanted more horror movies, and most of all, I wanted more of THIS.

The Cramps-Songs the Lord Taught Us

Okay, so maybe the Misfits had some help. I remember listening to this album on the way home when I lived in Tucson and being blown away by how primitive, yet masterful this album sounds. My introduction to psychobilly.

Sublime-40 oz to Freedom

This is a really spotty album as a whole, but it's still top 10 material, i'd think. I remember sitting in front of my stereo listening to this for almost the whole summer before 7th grade, as well as sucking at skateboarding in my insanely hot garage whilst enjoying this. It's reggae, it's dub, it's punk. My education in reggae, and i hold this album dear to my heart because of it.

Pinback-Summer in Abaddon

First time a song ever made me shed a tear. Not because it was sad or I was sad, but becasue of the emotion and the feeling and the atmosphere. I still get goosebumps when i listen to this. I remember it was a particularly sunny day in 2006 when I bought this. Spring break, I think. I am happy.

Opeth-Blackwater Park

Going through the ranks from butt-rock to punk to hardcore, my musical tastes constantly progressed. I emersed myself in both much softer and thoughtful music, aswell as the opposite extreme. This is probably one of the most important extreme metal albums ever recorded, and picking it up brought to light another side to my tastes and opened my doorway to black metal and the works. I am forever in debt to these Swedes.

I could go on and on and on and on and on, but I'm going to stop. But first, honorable mentions: Something by Integrity (Seasons in the Size of Days), because they control my life a little, i guess, and I can't stop buying their shit. Desmond Dekker, Toots, Dandy, Laurel Aitken, and the spirit of '69. The motherfucking king, Elvis Presley. Aggro. Explosions for letting me escape everything, always, no matter what. Joy Division. The Specials. A Silver Mt. Zion, because some hearts are true. MUSIC WITH FEELING! The music I've made over the years with people i love and trust. Also talking about music forever with Dr. Mantis Toboggan, The Pocock, and Hordan, because it's important to share it with someone you care about.

In the end, I think it's healthy to hold on to aspects of the past, whether good or bad, whether music or not. Nostalgia. Take from experiences and grow from them. Hold onto memories that will keep you looking forward and keeping your head up. Hold onto memories that make you sick to think about and overcome them. Don't forget where you came from and what got you there. It's good to remember, and I like remembering. I haven't lived long, but I do know this part of me will always be intact. But without further rambling, 2010, I say to you, I'm ready for the next step on the ladder that is my life. I'm ready for your shit, so fuck off and help me out with making this a year I'll want to look back on.
