Wreck and Reference - No Youth 2012
I know these are comparisons that will come back to haunt me in a taunting "Shut up you don't know nothing about nothing" kind of way. Which is something I have gotten used to this week on account of my brother stopping by and my un-ability to win at anything.
That being said...
It's alright. on my first listen through I thought if Horseback sucked and tried way too hard with some lo fi black metal in there as well. Then I realized i like it a lot more than that, there are just some stupid bits where a guy is talking and "Part 1" absolutely ruined any chance of that being carried out successfully, for me, in the future... butt future... forever....

Horseback - The Invisible Mountain 2009

horseback is fucking amazing. somewhere between old earth playing cult of luna covers, and lichens + cloudland canyon psy-trips with a pinch of batshit craziness. or lichens teaming up with old pelican. or expo 70 playing grind, i have no fucking idea what im talking about anymore. its awesome.
also, i am determined to make a 'drone state' EP, especially in light of this:

it may just be a microphone left on in my room while i drink and fart and listen to black metal. jeremy will probably show up. the EP will be 15 hours long.

Aidan Baker/thisquietarmy - A Picture of A Picture 2009
one of my favorite sleep albums. compared to say, sleep research facility, it is endlessly lively and nuanced. not nearly as much as aidan baker/tim hecker album, which sounds a bit like gentleman losers, but it stays very fluid within ambient drone music. the signature aidan baker washed-out tone + distortion shows up in each song, but it's all very gentle and...well, uplifting. i think i put some of these on a cd for my mom. actually no, i gave her carrizozo, but its a similar tone.
THAT'S RIGHT, MY MOM PRACTICALLY LISTENS TO NADJA
prior to this i guess they (baker + thisquietarmy) released 'orange', which i am trying to find now.
also this album apparently charted at #1 in montreal when it came out. where TQA is from, and where it was recorded, but still. also i had no idea that thisquietarmy is also parallel lines. i am really sick of endlessly productive drone dudes. and grouper. and marina rosenfeld (get ready). and any transsexual and endlessly productive drone artists i have forgotten.

Cloudland Canyons/Lichens - Exterminating Angel 2008

36's 30min song reminded me of my favorite 30 (31:48) minute song.
do you like likenz? the first 20 minutes are just...peaking ambient tides, and then it goes full-on philip glass. i used to try to sleep to this when it came out, but i ended up wayyyy too excited by what was happening.
lichens is definitely in there, but post-omns and pre-S/T, meaning only a brief
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
........................eeeeeeeeeee
eeeeeeeeeee.......................... eeeeeeeeeeeeoooooooooooeeeeee
........................... eeeeeeeeeee
enters the fray. most of his contribution seems...shaping and formative. but i havent heard other cloudland canyons, so im doing that now.
make no mistake, this single song really does sound like a complete album. it has near 10 distinct parts and never overstays.
this song makes me realize exactly what is sitting within the last 5 minutes of GYBE - east hastings.

36 - Tape Series: Green 2011

holy dickfuck it's 36. with beats (sounding kind of like tycho fell asleep leaning on one padded tone), and noise, sounding like final crushed into a juicer. much, much more revelatory than tape series blue. more cohesive, more pointed...
i love that there's a 30 minute song, and that's only the start.

Tim Hecker - Harmony In Ultraviolet 2006
presented without comment for now, because i am just so, so fucked up.
actually fucked up is extremely relative, and in this situation not at all reflective of my ability to type or think. it's tim hecker, it came out before imaginary country (2008) and right before the split with aidan baker (2007). there is almost no way i can describe the sound of this album more efficiently.
if you want to hear an ungainly, even more thesaurus-raping opinion:
http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/9497-harmony-in-ultraviolet/
i wonder what kind of degree you need to write a pitchfork review. i should have gotten one of those. do they consider "zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz" a legitimate genre? do the people making genres work there?

Lichens - The Psychic Nature of Being 2005
there isnt a decent version of the rad cover art, so here. the more time i spend listening to lichens, the more this sounds radically different from omns (2007). psychic nature is, strangely enough, more sonically/instrumentally in line with what he played live in 2007. heavy looping (compare bune to score line scoring), more low-toned hymnal singing (although he did do the higher, kind of...fuck....near-castrati tribal 'eeeeeeeeeeeeee' loop a lot). hes fucking amazing live, from his manner (lots of whiskey chugging, no words, ignoring the audience) to the way he holds the microphone (see: picture) that mutes just how loud he sings so as not to nuke the furry guitar, to how elegantly he uses a boss loop station (versus, say, russian circles just mashing away at it whenever they run out of ideas and need another guitar riff or a feedback interlude).
i dream a lot, and i forget a lot, but this album completely molded one of my most vivid dreams, and i only recall about 3 or 4 vivid dreams in my life. there were elephants and india and a sunset and fluorescent trees, but no ramnath.

Sleep Research Facility - Nostromo 2001

so this is his first album (of three, ending with Deep Frieze 2007), and it's....well, ostensibly it's a concept album. each track is a deck of the Nostromo from Alien, ive heard.
maybe i wasnt watching the same movie, but i remember most scenes of the nostromo being fraught with loud and sudden mortal terror. SRF's Nostromo feels more like the sense of dread that could accompany deep space isolation (which, okay, is where much of the suspense in the movie comes from, but the movie also relies on people being eaten and wailing on androids and cattle prodding jones), maybe more like the icarus 2 or the fruity space station full of george clooney's problems in solaris. je ne sais pas.
moreso than deep frieze, this sounds a lot like tor lundvall (vise versa, whatever). its very mechanical. like, VERY mechanical. the bass really stands out; it has the slight pulsing stagger of engines that have run for too long.
moreso than deep frieze, this one is slightly too disconcerting to sleep to, although it is fucking exhausting (in a good way). jesus even thinking about actually producing these songs makes me imagine him drenched in sweat and breathing hard (omg b0n3r). maybe thats just what drone state does to me (potential at 15min22 felt like maybe 3 minutes to make, i awoke afterwards sweaty, drooling, and upset. i had to catch droplets from entering the mic while singing on density of self). if you have some decent headphones, open a window and listen to this loud. the crickets are starting to oscillate pitch in polyrhythm.
update: wikipedia is crushing it on the topic
"SleepResearch_Facility consists of the single band member Kevin Doherty. His music usually contains no rhythmic elements (one exception is "2.5" on Dead Weather Machine), but instead relies on spacious, extended, richly-textured sounds. Occasionally, true 'musical' elements appear in his work, such as sustained chords (in "c-deck" on Nostromo for example), but the majority of his compositions consist of evolving layers of manipulated noise and mechanical drones. He deliberately attempts to avoid any sonic elements which would be likely to disturb a sleepy or sleeping listener, such as sudden loud noises.[2]
The music of SR_F is also intended to create an aural environment which allows listeners to let their thoughts drift, being gently guided (instead of forced) by the music.[3] The following advice is provided for listeners: "recommended playback level: just above quiet". A more detailed overview of SR_F can be found on the info page of the official website.
The works of SR_F are inspired by power stations, distant motorways, certain sci-fi movies (eg. Alien) and various aspects of nature, including thunderstorms, empty frozen tundra, deserts, jungles and rushing water.[2][4] Two complete albums (Dead Weather Machine and Dead Weather Machine Re:Heat) were based entirely on the manipulation of a three minute recording of a malfunctioning Dimplex electric fan heater.
So far, all albums by SR_F have been produced or engineered at Somnambu-Lab (also spelled Somnambulab) in Glasgow.[5] The correct spelling of the artist's name is SleepResearch_Facility, but Sleep Research Facility is a commonly seen variation."
i know none of you are listening to this stuff, but this guy is a dronemage.

Jefre Cantu-Ledesma - Love is a Stream 2010

from WFLM. and despite sounding like jordan wrote it, the caption over there uses the word 'shimmering' first, which is pretty apt.
"Shimmering, unrelenting, cosmic, blistering, powerful, soothing, hypnotic, dreamlike, pure and loving noise and feedback with beautiful melodies undulating under the surface. This is love like standing too close to the sun."
it sounds like...daytime tim hecker (listen to white dwarf butterfly, then listen to tim hecker - a stop at the chord cascades, or sea of pulses). actually it kind of sounds like the daytime version of the tim hecker/aidan baker album, because there is some guitar crunch low in a couple songs (like the first one). anyway, if you like tim hecker or aidan baker or port royal's flares, but are in a good mood and enjoy digestible music, here.
also the end of the last song kinda sounds like the sunshine OST when capa tests the bomb.
