Ben Frost & Daniel Bjarnason - Solaris 2011

here's a review i found that i dont really understand:

"Lots of wax and wane in Ben Frost & Daniel Bjarnason’s Solaris. It’s cold, not cold in a small pinched way, but cold in long flows, like streams of very contemplative melted snow running across a fairly level plain and never meeting. A stream starts off, thinking that it’s going somewhere, but then it reaches that place, or doesn’t, and the place is disappointing, and it drains away with a moan. Other sonic streams are running concurrently and doing the same. The two composers were inspired by the Tarkovsky film, hence the inward focus of the sounds, their isolation from one another, the grieving and the fading, the subtle repetition—the music remembering itself. It’s in the minimal amount of color of the sound-scape. Frost and Bjarnason took a string orchestra, let’s say that’s the snow; they fed it through a computer, there’s the melt."

Pensées Nocturnes - Ceci Est De La Musique 2011

one of the weirder things ive heard. i dont remember if they...he is LLN or not. MA says no. if you like your hour long songs with occassional oboe, cuckoo-clock noises, blastbeats, and ecclesiastic moaning, here you go. i think he manages to include every instrument ever.



cover art does a pretty apt job. its impressive as hell. the transitions between sounding like agalloch, nyktalgia, and a cathedral with a demented circus in it arent exactly fluid, but its an hour long. it can afford to be spacious. i wonder if there's like...sheet music for it. like 'oh yes, sebastian, i was hoping for more emotion from the 4-second saxophone noodle at 23.6 minutes. can we take it again from measure 473? and-a-one, and-a-two-'. theres just...SHIT HAPPENING EVERYWHERE. and then theres breathy symphonic interludes, which are actually really well done, and then suddenly *strings exit, include the sound of people cheering, cuckoo clock noise, blastbeat, strings reenter, guitar...enter piano, howling vocals, fermata, timpani roll, enter pipe organ, begin next section*. like at 41:30. where did this come from?! its like a crash master course in being really fucking good at music.



remember in the ocean - precambrian how they would just be like NOW HERES A RIFF WITH XYLOPHONE OVER IT? its like that, constantly, in smaller chunks, for 55 minutes. its the opposite of boring, in the way that french black metal usually is.

Sunshine OST 2007

so ive seen this movie about 8 times since 2007, and never with anyone else. this is prudent, because i get really, really choked up at a shit ton of different points, including: capa's last message home, the transit of mercury (WHY IS HARVEY STARING AT THE GROUND?), "kaneda...what do you see?!", capa testing the bomb, "searle...we're leaving now...", payload delivery, etc.

john murphys soundtrack is entirely to blame. its what cliff martinez' soundtrack for solaris should have been, but i suppose solaris should have been more like sunshine too, so that cant be his fault.

also i would fellate danny boyle for a number of moments in a number of movies, but "icarus....who is the fifth crewmember?" is fucking terrifying and awesome and i love that goddamn part.

at the end of time, a moment will come when just one man remains. then the moment will pass, and man will be gone. there will be nothing to show that we were ever here, but stardust. the last man, alone with god. am i that man?
