"The title of this perfectly perfect record is pronounced “wishyou” as in “I WIXIW could live inside this album,” or “I WIXIW guys would do this more often,” or maybe even “I WIXIW would tell me what drugs IW took and where IW get them.” Seriously, this thing plays like a soundtrack to The Magic School Bus book where the kids take a bunch of ludes and drive the bus into the ear of a guy who put himself into a Robitussin coma. Then, the battery on the bus dies and the kids have to find their own way out. Spoiler: They do not make it."

Background-y dubstep, feels like intermission music or something. It's really fuckin short though so it's not hard to give it a listen. I quite like Sacred Chants of Shiva. The genre tag on one of the digital outlets carrying this calls it "Skweee/Wonky/Aquacrunk". Lolwut? I certainly didn't feel trapped in an aquarium or felt it was particularly drippy/bubbly/wet. But now I am determined to find tr00 aquacrunk.

For me, autumn always rouses an acute craving for indie music, so this morning I went scavenging and found WU LYF. I was kind of hoping they were somehow relevant to Wu Tang, but alas, they're just a bunch of hipsters out of Manchester. I'm not just calling them hipsters because of their music (though that could definitely warrant the label), but because, well... Here's what their Wiki page says:

WU LYF (pronounced "Woo Life", stands for "World Unite Lucifer Youth Foundation") are a band from Manchester, England that originally became known for creating a mystery about themselves by declining requests for interviews and not releasing much information to the press. The band describes their music as "heavy pop".

The "World Unite Lucifer Youth Foundation" recorded this album in an abandoned church; they say it's because they "didn't like the studio acoustics," but I believe they did it to be ironic, and everyone knows that to be ironic is to be a hipster. Additionally, they made a solid point of being mysterious (via "carefully designed anonymity," according to The New York Observer), AND they're trying to coin their own genre. Hip! Hip!

Hipster accusations aside, this album is fucking great. Instrumentally, this reminds me of a poppier, more melodic Battles. The vocals are really different (I think) and overall, the abandoned church thing works really well for them. I bet seeing them live would be fucking phenomenal, and given the opportunity to see them, I'd probably be hoarse for at least a week following. Highly recommend this one.

Runhild Gammelsæter - Amplicon 2008

"

Runhild Gammelsaeter is a beast. She contorts her vocals to sound unreal, more ill-tempered than any horror film villain. Her intuitive sense of experimentation is profound, surpassing any female vocalist in metal. With her first solo album, Amplicon (Utech, 2008), Gammelsaeter exceeds expectations based on her work in Thorr’s Hammer and Khlyst. Putting forth her Ph.D. knowledge of cell physiology, she flavors Amplicon with ideas from physics, chemistry, and biology. Amplicons are pieces of DNA produced from organic or naturally occurring events, like evolution. As if producing music for something nonhuman, Gammelsaeter goes beyond human comprehension with frightening power.

Amplicon highlights her many demented voices. She deprives the album of rhythm, which she clearly demonstrates in the first track. “Collapse – Lifting the Veil” reveals Gammelsaeter’s schizophrenia. Her folk singing is uplifting, but her roar hammers that beauty to the ground. She then turns werewolf in “Expanding the Universe.” Her heavy growl and desperate whispering proves her pluck; no black metal frontman could top this terror.

With the production of Ulver’s Tore Ylwizaker, Gammelsaeter puts forth sounds that keep the mind anxious. “Incubation” invites avant-garde listeners with warped vocals and toy keyboards. Gammelsaeter creates comas: hospital beds, blurred vision, impaired hearing. She speaks incomprehensible words, finally hushing the turmoil away after four minutes. There isn’t anything out there as terrifying or enjoyable as this.

Tipper - Broken Soul Jamboree

This is the most mellow, somber, relaxing downtempo release from Tipper and it has a noticeable absence of rap battling frogs. Instead, I imagined myself floating down an incandescent river on an enormous lilly pad composed entirely of fractals, face down, tops of my fingers drifting through the water, with hidden mechanical frogs and other jungle animals shitting lasers and croaking wobbles at me while I indolently drifted past crystal forests, glass vegetation and frozen marshes. The song Dead Soon pretty much sums that description up. I wish this was the background music for FFXIII.

Tom Waits - Rain Dogs (1985)

This is possibly one of my favorite albums of all time. The eerie soundscapes, the off-kilter percussion and horn selection, the vocals that sound like a barrel full of whiskey-soaked gravel being set aflame and devoured... everything about it is absolutely stunning!

Tom Waits' personal best (in my opinion), although it could be his most inaccessible work, right up there with Swordfishtrombones. Listen to it, and hate it. Listen to it more and more and more and learn to never want to stop listening to it.
