Death Grips - The Money Store 2012

the meanest shit. im in your areeaaa.

from AV Club, 'In this maelstrom, rapper MC Ride’s voice is just another instrument of abrasion as he hollers in a voice so tattered and blown-out it must physically pain him. Few rappers show this little range. At his kindest, Ride sounds like RZA witnessing his car being towed; at his fiercest, like RZA barking orders at a bank teller as he takes hostages.'

the cage is my favorite just for the obnoxious synth.

Statik Selektah - Spell My Name Right 2007

Normally I'm not partial to "fat white guy" rap, after still seeing Brother Ali and DJ Snuggles live... and STILL haunting my dreams. This isn't as much Statik Selektah but an all-star cast of talent. Plenty of gr8 tracks, street anthems and underground bangers galore.

Definite standouts are "Do You Wanna Be Hardcore" and "Punch Out"

SPELL MY NAME RIGHT

BK One - For The Love Of The Music Mix 2004

"i believe it was a tour-only mix from BK One, label dj and beatmaker extraordinaire. a wide range of hip-hop is obviously represented here (from KRS and Kweli to Snoop and Redman and everything in between), but there are several tracks dedicated to an assortment of funk/soul and reggae/rocksteady. oh, and it's structured around samples from High Fidelity (aka the music snob's magnum opus movie) and it closes with William DeVaughn's "Be Thankful For What You Got," which is an absolutely perfect song in my estimation. the concept may sound pretty rote, but the execution is what makes this a mix i come back to over and again without fail."

- WFLM

it's pretty glorious. and i would kill for a complete tracklist, because i am way out of my league. actually im always out of my league. i feel like an asshole for enjoying music.

anyway, someone tell me what the song at 11:20 in Track 4 is. it's in san andreas also, je pense.

Eyedea & Abilities - By The Throat 2009

like atmosphere and astronautalis (but fucking FAST) mashed, but very bleak, aggressive, and depressed (je pense).

it's flawless and perfectly arranged, fully thought-out and mixed, but it seems so...

throwaway to them. (and i have to stress that that's more lyrical than the actual tone of the album; the lyrics are phenomenal and their talent is undeniable. i love the shit out of this)

im projecting ("he's projecting now, from downtown!") for sure, but it just sounds like a production from people who just can't care about anything anymore. people who have just been weighted down to the point that the act of making music feels inadvertently sarcastic. i dunno, i imagine you can be really good at something and it can still lose its luster. and then he died from opiate toxicity.

i guess i attribute a lot of that sense to how prolific and guttural the bass guitar sounds throughout the album. he raps like christ, and the beats are great, and then it just sounds like a whacked out early-nirvana is sitting in the background fuzzing their way into oblivion.

singlez

Teardrop (Knight Riderz Remix) | Massive Attack I want to wake up to this song every day for the rest of forever, at dawn, in slow motion. Preferably it'd be sung to me by metal Bui and his faithful wolfdog.

Infinite-vs. Lee Bannon | Zumbi The glitch modulator is back!

Slow Drug (Max Ulis Remix) | PJ Harvey This is dubbbbb, but I can't help but think that maybe it could use a little STEP. No, NOTHING IS SACRED.

Boudicca (Telekinesis Remix) | Optiv DRÜM'NBEIJ

Far | Auriculaire This song is amazing in that keeps dramatically and flawlessly changing texture. Piano samples, live drum samples, eerie synths. The noises! So goooood.

DnB Ting (PockX Extended Edit) | Skrillex This song makes me want to do massive quantities of cocaine.

Raise Your Weapon (Sluggo & Nerd Rage Remix) | DeadMau5 Because there aren't enough versions of this fucking song... This one's definitely my favorite. It's got spunk! Spunkstep! Boom bap!

AZ - Decade

So I figure what I post on here will be a mix between the endless goofy shit... and do I mean endless. and the occasional listenable gems. You decide.

Forget Kanye! This has been playing almost non stop since I replaced my hard drive, one of the more underrated MCs out there. AZ has a nimble style that never forgot about substance. It's like if you combined the hunger of a starved goat with the grace of a... jellyfish...and then taught it english. Then exposed it to a simmering New York salsa scene, where it would eventually learn to rap. Great flow and delivery. A best of album to get your feet wet...or submerge completely. but fuck, man. watch out for dem goat jellyfish!
