i wish someone else was listening to this stuff. tim hecker is a lot like 36 or the less haunting ben frost or jasper TX, but solidly electronic pulses and waves and sheer tidal loops. lots of layers, lots of different keys and timbres and such sliding around laterally on top of each other.

it's a little different from an imaginary country, although the two albums morph into one another pretty seamlessly, much in the way 36 - hollow becomes memories in widescreen.

certainly appropriate to post at 4:38am under a blacklight. sounds like muted crystal castles, or old bands that i should know and be into but im not (case in point: i would like to say there are bits of joy division in there, but ive never really gotten into joy division, although i have seen control 3 times. so i will not say this, so jordan doesnt show up and start wiggling his flaccid elitist OLD MUSIC DICK AT ME) . songs like "a walk" remind me of being in middle school and listening to rapture and paradise lost and anathema and deciding that i always want to live in a city where it rains and i can see my breath. and it reminds me of hearing the albums velvet cacoon stole and deciding the pacific northwest was for me. shades of salem, but very quiet and more fluid shades. salem covering sleep research facility songs.

regardless, it's pretty sad, but a little too active to sleep to. really nice use of vocals.

Deafheaven - Roads to Judah 2011

now on deathwish, and fuck it's good. sounds like melo-WITTR, or a combination of the newest and oldest altar of plagues (not white tomb) in that its...well...pretty much post rock with blastbeats and some subdued-ish vocals. its really phenomenal. up there with the demo and altar of plagues.

also: i always forget about melodic black metal until i listen to it, but the sheer desperation in the tone completely destroys me. i get this grimace on my face and really wide eyes and creepy shit and i imagine i can feel my body collapsing in real time and i feel so rushed; like everything i have ever done has been a complete waste of time.

i dont know. i fucking love that desperation though. its the best way i can describe it. the pissed melodic suicidal hardcore doesnt even come close. deathspell touches it sometimes when they throw in one of their ludicrous melodies, but generally its these blastbeat-y long songs that toy with simple delayed melodic progressions that do it. (first half of tunnel of trees, most WITTR). it's when the song doesnt slow for a really long time and you adapt to hearing the blastbeat, so the only thing changing is the tremolo chord and it kind of enters this drone-state, where despite the rampant physical kinetics of the song, not a whole lot changes from beat to beat. then when it stops you realize again that it had been furious picking and drumming and suddenly there is this colossal void.

so....yeah. i like that.

so ive seen this movie about 8 times since 2007, and never with anyone else. this is prudent, because i get really, really choked up at a shit ton of different points, including: capa's last message home, the transit of mercury (WHY IS HARVEY STARING AT THE GROUND?), "kaneda...what do you see?!", capa testing the bomb, "searle...we're leaving now...", payload delivery, etc.

john murphys soundtrack is entirely to blame. its what cliff martinez' soundtrack for solaris should have been, but i suppose solaris should have been more like sunshine too, so that cant be his fault.

also i would fellate danny boyle for a number of moments in a number of movies, but "icarus....who is the fifth crewmember?" is fucking terrifying and awesome and i love that goddamn part.
