Boris - Heavy Rocks (2011) 2011

boris make me feel like a fucking retard for ever liking music without an electric guitar in it. i was concerned when they announced they were going to release like 40 albums in 2011, but jesus christ. if theyre all this fucking mind-bendingly emotive and awesome and perfect and destructive, then go for it. boris has got to be one of the few bands that knows what they're doing, even if it changes all the time, and loves doing it so much that they devote everything to constant improvement.

i love boris. a lot.

see them live. a lot.

Krallice - Diotima (2011)

I like post-rock. I like black metal. But Liturgy's vocals are awful. Another (better) black metal-ish band from NY -

Seriously, listen to

Liturgy - Aesthetica (2011)

So I don't know what this is, but it's really intense shoegazey-jangly-noisy-evil black metal from Brooklyn. They describe themselves as "transcendental black metal". I don't know how I feel about that, but there are layers of post-rockish crescendos buried underneath waves of noise and blast beats and tortured screams. This shits on your views of what modern black metal can be. I love this.

listen.

Ludique - ludique

Ambient / IDM / Techno (their labels, not mine) out of the Netherlands. Sound kind of like Trentemøller at times, though not quite as polished or consistent. Still, they're only students, so they have a lot of potential. On this album, they've apparently decided to name their songs using madlibs, with titles including "Flabbergasm," "Sex Madness," and "Banana Joe is going bananas."

Highlights are:
Learning the Ropes
Der Zauberer
Universal Soldiers
Nightfall

The other songs can be good, but also occasionally wander into weird territories. Still, worth a listen as they do some interesting things.

Escape The Day - Ghostless 2005

i have been waiting for a copy of this album since 2005. escape the day are one of the very first ambient-ish bands i started listening to, along with kill the zodiac and last days, and i was really excited to hear that their album (off which some mp3s had been released, "days" in particular had a huge impact on me) would be coming out. then florian, half of the band, sent out all of the material and killed himself. for a year or two after that, there was debate as to whether or not the album would be compiled or released at all.

needless to say, i was a bit surprised when it showed up on icoulddietomorow a week or two ago (although i have no idea when it actually was released).

the music is “for lonely walks, hangovers, or just falling asleep", and it is unbelievably goddamn sad.

True Widow - As High As The Highest Heavens And From The Center To The Circumference Of The Earth 2011

i made it halfway through one song and started sharting hard. also there is the added bonus of soundweave referring to it as "Texas slowcore doomgaze trio." and comparing it to earth and jesu and low and codeine. it kinda sounds like ASMZ if there were 3 of them and they had nothing to complain about. or if nirvana had lasted another decade.

it is retard phenomenal. do not not get this.

Boxcutter - The Dissolve 2011

i was kind of hoping for an entire album of rusty break, but this is real cool. like if break science just made jazz, or fancy mike always had to play in the dark, or tycho went from one guy to 5, two of whom were from tera melos.

Dangers - Messy, Isn't It? (2010)

"A small ziploc bag is all that it takes for a father to seem less a man than mistake.
'Cause that's not the type of thing that you want to find under bed when your horny and fifteen with smut and pornography mind. You want blow jobs not blow, rather cum than cry."

Self-loathing hardcore that hates everything, and has a lot of tempo changes and rad drums and cool guitar tone.
