Tom Waits - Rain Dogs (1985)

This is possibly one of my favorite albums of all time. The eerie soundscapes, the off-kilter percussion and horn selection, the vocals that sound like a barrel full of whiskey-soaked gravel being set aflame and devoured... everything about it is absolutely stunning!

Tom Waits' personal best (in my opinion), although it could be his most inaccessible work, right up there with Swordfishtrombones. Listen to it, and hate it. Listen to it more and more and more and learn to never want to stop listening to it.

claphands.

Elliott Smith - s/t (1995)

So as of 06/28 I've decided to quit soda. I'm allowing myself one soda a day, and it's killing me. I've been having really bad headaches all day and I've been in a weird mood. All I'm drinking lately is water, and it's weird. I never realized how dependent on Dr. Pepper I am until now. What a bummer.

Smith said that he "personally can't get more dark" than his self-titled album

Now, on to the music. This is music I've been listening to forever, and lately I've been using it to cure my headaches. Every music-literate person should have this in their collection, no matter their genre preference. Absolutely heartbreaking and tear-jerking lyrics and atmosphere. But it's mellow, and almost purely acoustic, so it's good to mellow out with.

sorry for the rant.

vulcaaaaaaaaaan

I mostly listen to music when I'm working on something else, like mapping, GIMPing, etc., so it's mostly more ambient/atmospheric music.

At The End Of The Day - Amon Tobin

Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt - DJ Shadow
DJ Shadow has a lot of interesting music, most (all?) of it relying heavily on samples. This song stood out overall, although Organ Donor and Stem are also solid.

Colder - Bitcrush
Above average ambient-type stuff for a while, and then Bitcrush tries to become Ben Frost and does a decent job of it.

Dayvan Cowboy - Boards of Canada
The first half of the video does a much better job of reflecting the feel of the song than I ever could. The first half of the video consists of Joseph Kittinger's jump, and the song just gets...warm after that. In a good way.

Everything is Alright - Four Tet
Sounds like something you'd play over a montage about graphic artists.

Let the Light In - Lens
Has a cool atmospheric sound.

Parks on Fire - Trifonic
Interesting song with a neat video. Has more variety than most of the ambient stuff I hear.

Tepid Coat - Damiak
This song kind of reminds me of Explosions in the Sky. Damiak was also part of the n5md label, Bitcrush is responsible for the guitar in this song. The linked page has a minute or so of the 7-minute song, I couldn't find anything longer anywhere else.

The Launching of Big Face - Plaid & Bob Jaroc
+1000000 points for the song name, but the song itself sounds like...curiosity? Can songs do that? I'm blanking on any other applicable term. This is one of my favorite non-NT songs.

Wurlitzer - The Lushlife Project
Similar to Let The Light In, not quite as atmospheric.

This soundtrack is from a Half-Life 2 mod called Neotokyo. The mod is heavily influenced by Ghost in the Shell, so it's no surprise that these songs sound like cyberpunk future. This OST is incredible, had Ed Harrison done it for an actual game and not a mod he probably would have won a couple of awards.
Departure - Ed Harrison
Neotokyo OST Disc 1 - Ed Harrison
Neotokyo OST Disc 2 - Ed Harrison

Oh, and there's this song:
Standpipe Valve - Zircon
It does not fit with any of the songs above. Not ambient, not atmospheric. More ike aural cotton candy.

The Rural Alberta Advantage - Hometowns (2009)

This album was my AOTY from last year. Amazing "indie" pop/folk rock from - you guessed it - Torontonians! The drumming on this album is incredible, and the subtle hints of synth are thrown in at just the right times. Listen to it, I guarantee you'll like it.

listen.

6.24.2010

Defeater - Travels (2008)

This is for you, Duncan.
Defeater are an intense emotional, melodic hardcore band with heartfelt lyrics and jumpy time signatures that hit you like a wave. It's a concept album (not too common in hardcore) about a man who grows up in an abusive home, kills his alcoholic father, runs away from home, returns to find his mother has overdosed and kills his own brother before confessing his sins... I'll leave the rest for you to find out... it's absolutely incredible.

Honestly, one of the top 10 hardcore albums of all time. The acoustic ending to "Prophet in Plain Clothes" is bonechilling. When I saw this band live, the singer started the set out with that same acoustic part before the band exploded into chaos.

Recommended songs:
Blessed Burden
Prophet in Plain Clothes
Cowardice
Forgiver Forgetter
Hell, the entire fucking album!

he clenched his fists, "what did she ever do to you, besides raise us by herself when you were too drunk to come through?"

The Fellowship - Summer Standards Mix 2010

just get it. theres nothing to say.

but when has that ever stopped me?

its FUCKING AWESOME. clocking in at a perfect 68 minutes, with improved transitions and a more diverse set of flavors and a more obscure track list, it's probably more of a summer night than a summer day, because it is fucking heavy as shit, and not something you would ever want to relax to.

just get it.

36 - Hollow 2010

holy god. this is the finest ambient drone album i have heard since ben frost. better than aidan bakers solo stuff, better than cylon. it covers near-endless sonic territory without making you feel like you are wading through drone, but stays true enough to a theme that you dont have the problem of trying to sleep to a last days album where the tone shifts wildly from song to song.

whats even better is that you can visually sum up the entire album by looking at the cover art. think of every emotion you could possibly feel while being in that picture, then listen to the album straight through. it is fucking phenomenal.

Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma (2010)

So this latest album from Flying Lotus (Steven Ellison) features: funky basslines, Thom Yorke, ping pong balls, an abundance of harp, ambient glitchiness, meowing, tenor sax, and a metric shit ton of electronic noise. Very chill and jazzy as usual. My favorites so far are "Do the Astral Plane" and "Recoiled".

Also, admire the cover art. It's by Leigh McCloskey. Up until this, McCloskey acted in many soap operas including General Hospital and The Young and the Restless. From there, he moved on to Star Trek (Voyager AND Deep Space Nine); and from there, he pursued a career as an author, writing such works as Tarot ReVisioned and Codex Tor: Winter Solstice-Part One. He also wrote a textbook of magic. Conclusion: this guy fucking rocks. Also, today is his birthday! Happy 55th, brah.

Last Lights - No Past No Present No Future (2009)

Amazing melodic hardcore in the vein of American Nightmare, Modern Life is War, Defeater and others. Incredibly emotional and evil as fuck, this band broke up after the death of their lead singer, Dominic Mallory, in 2008. This is basically a compilation of all their material, which wasn't much.

Also, if you download this album, PLEASE PLEASE buy the album, a shirt, anything, all of the proceeds to this band go to Dom's family.

Alaskan - The Weak And The Wounded 2010

think converge in melodic sludge mode, which is...uhh...more like rosetta? a lot like rosetta but more

jesus fucking christ i dont know anymore. someone somewhere probably has a post- qualifier for whatever the shit im trying to describe right now. its really fucking good and melodic and builds up sometimes and they write songs that i would love to scream along to in a live setting. so who the fuck cares.

also the album-long sample is fucking terrifying and awesome.

Scorn - Refuse; Start Fires 2010

mick harris, the de facto creator of the blast beat, makes terrifyingly amazing dubstep. if you like to talk shit about dubstep, but like drone, try this. its a different style, but distinctly dubstep. in the sense that cocaine and ketamine are both white crystalline solids.

Alone in the comforting darkness the creature waits. As confusion reigns on this hellish stage, the deafening grind of machinery, the odious clot of chemical waste. Still, the trail of his ultimate prey leads through this steely maze to these, the addled offspring of the modern world.

Quiet, brooding darkjazz.

To entice everyone to go see them play on Sunday. They are great live, great on albums, and great dudes. They are leaving on tour soon, so come out and buy a shirt. Or their new album is coming out, so buy that too. I would listen to this band if they weren't local. Mind-bogglingly evil grind.
